Self – Esteem and Dignity lies in Mutual Respect

Farrukh H. Saif

Farrukh H Saif of World Vision in Progress (WVIP) has been accused of doing something nefarious to the Pakistan Christian community. In the article below Shamim does not provide any detail but only writes:

“I quote; the shameful act some Pakistani people did against the chief of World Vision in Progress (WVIP); Farrukh H Saif. I guess and believe that it is fabricated and planned against his organization and his family. … And this act by some duffer [Blogger Editor: I am guessing a “duffer” is a common British term – It means “An incompetent or stupid person, especially an elderly one] not only is a try to defame him only, but the entire community involved in helping Christians in the country. He said neither he has any affiliation with PML-N and nor can [he] go against the Christians of the country. …”

Shamim’s article is a character defense of Farrukh H. Saif who is the Executive Director of the Pakistan WVIP. The only negative I could find on Farrukh H Saif via Google is a WVIP notification denying they are “…against the Pakistani Christian Asylum Seekers” who fled Muslim violence to Bangkok Thailand. Since the context of Shamim’s story incorporates the political party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The Wikipedia write-up on PML-N labels the party a Center-Right coalition. Pakistani Christians tend to question just how “Center” the PML-N is. An Op-Ed by Nazir S Bhatti I found in the Pakistan Christian Post profoundly writes the reasons for Christians and other non-Muslim Pakistanis to distrust the agenda of PML-N.

Self – Esteem and Dignity lies in Mutual Respect

By Shamim Masih

ISLAMABAD: Healthy self-esteem is important because some of us think too little of ourselves; on the other hand, some of us overestimate themselves. The key to an honest and accurate evaluation knows the basis of our self-worth – our identity. Evaluating yourself by the worldly standards of success and achievement can cause you to think too much about your worth in the eyes of others and thus miss your true value in God’s eyes.

Many Christian activists are working in this arena; some have a solid background and support. While others pretend but actually are playing blame games. This is the point which disgraces and creates ambiguity among our Pakistani Christian among West. I am aware of most but not all the activists and groups I noted trying to uplift lives of Christians in Pakistan. Who begin with good intentions but don’t always follow through once larger sums start coming in. This is sad that some Pakistanis seem to work against each other and this is what the West sees so does not feel able to trust or believe unity is possible to move the cause forward and support it.

I quote; the shameful act some Pakistani people did against the chief of World Vision in Progress (WVIP); Farrukh H Saif. I guess and believe that it is fabricated and planned against his organization and his family. To my knowledge and [what I have] seen [of] his work for the last couple of years, he is not this kind of person. Whatever his past is I [don’t] care, but [for] now he has saved hundreds of lives of innocent Pakistani Christians who [are] caught under the false cases. Farrukh is the leading person from the Pakistani Christian community who is currently working for the persecuted Christians in the Islamic world. And this act by some duffer not only is a try to defame him only, but the entire community involved in helping Christians in the country. He said neither he has any affiliation with PML-N and nor can [he] go against the Christians of the country. Pakistani Christians are dear to me and I love them and serve them beyond [the] horizon, he added.

Farrukh himself denied and condemns this shameful and cowardly act and urged those people to stop doing cunning [exploitation] and work honestly for the betterment of Pakistani Christians. Instead sitting in different countries and enjoy a luxurious life in the name of poor Pakistani Christians. He also warned and cautioned to take strict measures against the people involved in it.

Christian Couple Sentenced to Death

Shafqat Emmanuel (Morning Star News via World Vision in Progress)

Shafqat Emmanuel (Morning Star News via World Vision in Progress)

AGAIN Pakistan has subjected more Christians to death sentences for blaspheming against Islam. There is an indication that the USA is finally beginning to notice this persecution of the Pakistan Christian minority. Muslims in Pakistan are using the rule of law to exploit Pakistani Christians because the accusations are widely unsubstantiated. Muslims use the Blasphemy Law legal code to settle disputes to their favor or to have an excuse to seize land.

Shamim Masih has the report that alerted me to this most recent case against a Christian couple. However, I did a little checking and discovered there is more detail that should pique your awareness about modern day ethnic cleansing by Muslims against Christians in Pakistan. I am posting two other similar stories that should spark some outrage.

Christian Couple Sentenced to Death

Blasphemy Accused Christian Couple Stand in the Queue of Death

By Shamim Masih

Sent: 4/4/2014 8:19 AM

ISLAMABAD: On March 27, a session court in Lahore sentenced a Christian man at the heart of the controversy that triggered the riots to death for blasphemy. After a week, on April 4, 2014, session court in Toba Tak Singh announced the death sentence for a Christian couple, Shafaqat Emmanuel and his wife Shagufta Kauser, both accused of sending blasphemous text massages.

According to World Vision in Progress [WVIP], an additional session judge, Mian Amir Habib, has announced the death sentence for a Christian couple accused of blasphemy case. Last year, on July 21st, 2013, a crippled Shafaqat Emmanuel and his wife Shagafta Kauser were arrested under First Investigation Report – FIR No. 407/13 under section 295-B & C, allegedly sending blasphemous text messages to the local Muslims. WVIP reported that neither the SIM card was registered with their names nor the couple was qualified enough to write these text in English. Furrakh H Saif, chief of WVIP managing the case said that the hypocrisy and the shallowness of our legal system stands exposed. As usual, the lower court has gone with the populist, Islamist stance on a sensitive blasphemy case and kicked the ball down the road to the high court. The blasphemy law will continue to bed evil Pakistan as long as they are on the statute books and local courts remain susceptible to fear of or coercion by violent extremists, he said.

In this situation we fear that Pastor Adnan and Asif Pervaiz could be other victims of our Pakistani extra judicial killing, he added.

A recent report from a US government advisory panel [Link added by Editor] said Pakistan used blasphemy laws more than any other country in the world; listing 15 people on death row and 19 others serving life sentences.

In January 2014, an elderly Briton was sentenced to death for blasphemy [Link added by Editor] though his lawyers said that court failed consider “overwhelming” evidence of his mental illness.

Be Blessed,

Shamim Masih

Christian couple get death sentence in blasphemy case

Pakistan Today

Just days after a Christian man was sentenced to death for alleged blasphemy in Lahore, a trial court in Toba Tek Singh on Friday handed death sentence to an uneducated poor Christian couple accused of texting blasphemous messages to local Muslims in Gojra, Pakistan Today has learnt.

Advocate Nadeem Hassan, who represented Shafqat Emmanuel and Shagufta Kausar, in court, told Pakistan Today that Additional Sessions Judge Mian Amir Habib had announced the death sentence under “great pressure” even though the prosecution had failed to present any concrete evidence against the couple.

“Touqir Ashraf advocate and some other Islamist lawyers from Lahore, who were representing the complainants, openly pressurised the judge during the jail trial of the accused. Even on Friday, the complainants’ lawyers kept reciting Quranic verses referring to death for blasphemers, and said that they were willing to become Ghazi Ilamdin Shaheed and Mumtaz Qadri if the judge did not convict the accused,” said Hassan.

The case [FIR No. 407/13] against Shafqat, a 43-year-old crippled man, and his wife Shagufta, a cleaner at a local missionary school, was registered on June 20, 2013 by the Gojra City Police Station under sections 295-B and 295-C of the blasphemy law and 25-D of The Telegraph Act of 1985 which recommends a maximum of three years for intentionally “causing annoyance”.

They were accused of sending blasphemous text messages to the complainants Muhammad Hussain and Tehsil Bar Association President Anwar Mansoor Goraya from a number allegedly registered in the name of Shagufta on June 18, 2013. The couple was taken into custody on June 20 and sent to the Toba Tek Singh District Jail the next day.

“The police failed to recover the SIM [Subscriber Identity Module] allegedly registered in Shagufta’s name from the couple’s possession. The police just produced a receipt of a cellular company on which Shagufta’s national identity card number was written against the number,” the lawyer said, adding that the police had earlier claimed that Hussain’s call data revealed that the messages had been sent from Shagufta’s cell phone number.

Hassan said that during the preliminary investigation Shagufta had told the police that her cell phone had been lost for a month, and that she did not know who might have sent the alleged messages. Nevertheless, the Gojra City Police detained the couple, along with their four minor children, and pressured them to name someone who could have sent the messages.

Hassan said that in order to placate the mobs led by some Islamist clerics, the police forced Shagufta’s husband Shafqat to confess that he had sent the blasphemous messages. “The police tortured Shafqat to confess before a judicial magistrate but the crippled man had retracted his statement when we moved the court to record his statement again,” he said.

Shafqat’s backbone was fractured in an accident in 2004. Since then he has been restricted to a wheelchair due to the paralysis of his lower body. He is also fitted with a catheter. Since his accident, Shagufta has been the only breadwinner for the family’s four children, Ambrose (13), Danish (10), Sarah (7), and Amir (5).

The lawyer said that they would challenge the verdict in High Court once they receive a copy of the detailed verdict.

NOT THE FIRST CASE

At least three other cases have been registered previously against Christians based on blasphemous text messages.

In May 2006, Qamar David was accused of sending blasphemous text messages to various Islamic clerics in Karachi. He was convicted in February 2010 and died in prison on March 15, 2011.

In January 2009, Hector Aleem and Basharat Khokhar were accused of sending text messages that hurt Muslims’ religious sentiment. They were acquitted of the charge on May 31, 2011.

Sixteen-year-old Ryan Stanton was charged with sending blasphemous text messages in Karachi on October 10, 2012. He has fled the country after the family’s home was ransacked by a violent Muslim mob.

Pastor Zafar Bhatti was accused of the same crime on November 11, 2012.

At least two Muslims, Abdul Sattar and Irfan Rafique, have also been charged for sending text messages.

Pakistan has never carried out an execution for blasphemy, which it defines as “the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God.”

Pakistani couple get death sentences for blasphemy

5 April 2014 Last updated at 11:13 ET

BBC

A Pakistani Christian couple have been sentenced to death for blasphemy after allegedly sending a text message insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

The couple, named as Shafqat Emmanuel and Shagufta Kausar, were found guilty of sending the text message to the imam of their local mosque.

Allegations of blasphemy against Islam are taken very seriously in Pakistan.

Several recent cases have prompted international concern about the application of blasphemy laws.

The imam brought a complaint against the couple last July.

The couple’s lawyer told the BBC he would appeal against the sentences and said the trial had not been conducted fairly.

Pakistan has a de facto moratorium on the death penalty so it is unlikely the couple will be executed.

They come from the town of Gojra in Punjab, previously the scene of communal violence.

In 2009 the rumoured desecration of a copy of the Koran led to a mob burning nearly 40 houses and a church in Gojra. At least eight members of Christian community died in the violence.

Minorities targeted

Since the 1990s, scores of Christians have been convicted for desecrating the Koran or blaspheming against the Prophet Mohammed.

While most of them have been sentenced to death by the lower courts, many sentences have been overturned due to lack of evidence.

Critics argue that Pakistan’s blasphemy laws are frequently misused to settle personal scores and that members of minority groups are also unfairly targeted.

Muslims constitute a majority of those prosecuted, followed by the minority Ahmadi community.

In 2012 the arrest of a young Christian girl, Rimsha Masih, on blasphemy charges provoked international outrage. After being detained in a high security prison for several weeks she was eventually released and her family subsequently fled to Canada.

Christian Couple in Pakistan Sentenced to Death for ‘Blasphemy’

Sentence comes eight days after second Christian handed death penalty.

Morning Star News

LAHORE, Pakistan (Morning Star News) – A Christian couple in Punjab Province incapable of writing proper Urdu was sentenced to death today for allegedly sending blasphemous text messages, bringing the number of Christians on death row in Pakistan to four.

In a country reeling from increasing religious intolerance, the death knell for Shafqat Emmanuel and Shugufta Emmanuel sounded eight days after a court in Lahore sentenced another Christian, Sawan Masih, to death for allegedly insulting Islam’s prophet, Muhammad, during a drunken conversation with a Muslim friend. that made Masih the second Christian in Pakistan now on death row after a judge sentenced Christian mother Asia Bibi to death for alleged blasphemy in November 2010.

A court in Toba Tek Singh heard the case against Shafqat Emmanuel, 43, and his wife, a cleaner at a local missionary school and mother to four young children. They were accused of sending blasphemous text messages on June 18, 2013, to complainants Muhammad Hussain and Gojra Tehsil Bar Association President Anwar Mansoor Goraya from a number allegedly registered in Shagufta’s name.

The Gojra City Police in Punjab charged them with blasphemy under Sections 295-B (insulting the Koran, punishable by life imprisonment), 295-C (insulting Muhammad, punishable by death) and 25-D of The Telegraph Act of 1985. Section 25-D recommends a maximum of three years for intentionally “causing annoyance.”

The couple’s lawyer, Nadeem Hassan, said the judge had succumbed to Islamists’ pressure and handed down the death sentence even though there was no concrete evidence against the couple.

“Toba Tek Singh Additional Sessions Judge Mian Amir Habib was clearly intimidated by advocate Touqir Ashraf  and some other Islamist lawyers from Lahore who were representing the complainants,” Hassan said. “These men kept pressuring the judge during the entire trial, which was conducted in prison due to fears for the couple’s security. Even on Friday [March 28], the complainants’ lawyers kept proclaiming Koranic references calling for death to blasphemers.”

Prosecuting attorneys told the court they were “determined to become Ghazi Ilamdin Shaheed and Mumtaz Qadri if the judge did not convict the accused,” Hassan told Morning Star News in Lahore. Ilamdin Shaheed is revered as a hero by Muslims for killing a Hindu publisher, Mahasay Rajpal, who in 1924 published a book considered blasphemous against Muhammad. Qadri was a police guard who gunned down a top government official, Salman Taseer, because of his outspoken views on the country’s controversial blasphemy laws. Qadri has been sentenced to death but has challenged his conviction.

“The police failed to recover the SIM [Subscriber Identity Module] allegedly registered in Shagufta’s name from the couple’s possession,” Hassan said. “The police just produced a receipt of a cellular company on which Shagufta’s national identity card number was written against the number.”

He added that police had earlier claimed that Hussain’s call data had revealed that the messages had been sent from Shagufta’s cell phone number. Hassan said that during the trial, he kept demanding that the prosecution present the call data record in court, which they failed to do.

“During preliminary investigations, Shagufta had told the police that her cell phone had been lost for a month, and that she did not know who might have sent the alleged messages,” he said. “Nevertheless, the Gojra City Police detained the couple, along with their four minor children, and pressured them to name someone who could have sent the messages.”

Hassan said that in order to appease mobs led by Islamist clerics, police forced Shafqat Emmanuel, who is confined to a wheelchair due to a spinal injury, to confess that he had sent the blasphemous messages.

“The police tortured Shafqat to confess before a judicial magistrate, but the crippled man retracted his statement when we requested the session judge to record his statement again,” he said.

Shafqat’s backbone was fractured in an accident in 2004. Since then he has been paralyzed in the lower body. Since his accident, Shagufta has been the only breadwinner for the family’s four children, Ambrose, 13, Danish, 10, Sarah, 7, and Amir, 5.

Hassan said he would challenge the verdict in High Court once he receives a copy of the detailed verdict.

Biased Court

Farrukh Harrison of the Christian advocacy group World Vision in Progress told Morning Star News that his group had been protesting against the “court’s biased attitude” from the trial’s outset.

“Judge Habib simply refused to accept our submissions regarding insufficient evidence presented by the prosecution,” Harrison said. “We also moved the High Court in this regard, but our petition was referred back with a direction to the trial court to expedite the matter.”

Harrison lamented the fact that the judge had given death sentence to both the husband and wife even though they had forced a confession from her husband.

“Why was Shagufta given death sentence when the police claims that her husband had committed the act?” he said. “Isn’t this travesty of justice that a poor couple has been convicted for a motiveless crime?”

Harrison said the court also should have noted that in most cases of blasphemy, the accused are from poor background.

“The question is what could have been this couple’s motive for committing this crime in the first place,” he said. “They are uneducated, poor people whose entire life is limited to their hometown only.”

The activist further said that their lawyer had told the court that the couple couldn’t possibly have written the alleged texts written in Roman Urdu when they couldn’t even read or write Urdu properly.

“It’s only a matter of time when two other Christians accused of blasphemy [Pastor Adnan Masih, aka Adnan Prince, and Asif Pervaiz] would also be given the death sentence,” he said. “It’s a pity that all these people will have to suffer for years in prison until the High Court judges their cases on merit.”

Ryan Stanton, then 16, was charged with sending blasphemous text messages in Karachi on Oct. 10, 2012. He has fled the country after the family’s home was ransacked by a violent Muslim mob.

At least two Muslims, Abdul Sattar and Irfan Rafique, have also been charged with sending text messages.

Rights groups have said that Pakistan’s blasphemy laws are often misused to persecute minorities and to settle personal scores. In a recent report, Amnesty International said the vague formulation of the blasphemy laws, along with inadequate investigation by authorities and intimidation by mobs and some religious groups, has promoted vigilantism across Pakistan, especially in Punjab Province.

Although Pakistani courts have ordered death sentences on a variety of charges, thousands of inmates have been parked on death row since a government moratorium on executions began in 2008. But since the election last year of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has publicly supported capital punishment, analysts have speculated that the government might move to hold executions.

Sawan Masih was sentenced by Lahore Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Ghulam Murtaza on March 27. The street sweeper was also fined 200,000 rupees (US$2,027). Accusations against Masih sparked the destruction of 180 Christian-owned homes and shops in Lahore’s Joseph Colony in March 2013; an anti-terrorism court freed the 133 Muslim suspects in spite of strong video evidence against them.

Blasphemy Law in Pakistan Slaughtered another Accused

By Shamim Masih

Sent: 3/27/2014 12:30 PM

ISLAMABAD: During the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League (N), Joseph Colony was the second incident [Muslims attacking Christians] in the province Punjab. Earlier a Christian colony in Gojra was set in ablaze and a family was burnt alive. In Joseph Colony, there were no casualties in the Christian community during this incident but around 200 house dwellings, two churches and many shops were burnt including found Holy Bible and Holy books belonging to Christians.

The blasphemy suspect was identified as Sawan Masih 26 years of age. Police took him into custody and placed him on judicial remand. After a year of the case trial, Sawan Masih is reportedly been given the death sentence by the trial judge. What about those who burnt Bibles and holy Books of the Christians?

On March 09, 2013, a highly charged mob of a few thousand Muslims set ablaze around the 200 houses, shops and two churches of this more than 50 years old locality over the allegation of blasphemy against Sawan Masih. The violent mob, locals say, asked the Christian community to hand over the accused to them or get ready for the consequences. The mob burned their houses after looting all [the Christians’] valuables from almost every house, they said.

The Government has given reasonable financial compensation, but the scars are still there. Now Sawan Masih becomes another victim of the blasphemy law in the country.

Actually Sawan Masih (accused) [Blog Editor: Initial Shamim report] and Shahid Imran (complainant) were friends for the last ten years and the complainant used to run his stall in front of the colony. The residents claimed that local influential traders wanted to vacate the colony and turned it into godams (stores) to expand their business.

Furrakh H Saif, chief of World Vision in Progress (WVIP) considers it a kangaroo justice with the victims of blasphemy law. He said that judges are biased and are under pressure from Islamists. In its routine order, they will soon award death sentences to Shagufta with her husband Shafaqat and Pastor Adnan, he added.

Be Blessed,

Shamim Masih

Kashmala Munawar - Victim of Peshawar Church Terrorism

Shamim Masih reports on some heroic exploits that occurring because of the Christian compassion of World Vision in Progress (WVIP) in Pakistan pertaining to the victims of the Islamic terrorist attack shortly after a Church service in Peshawar that claimed around 90 victims at the All Saints Church. WVIP is helping many of these victimized Christians but Shamim focuses on one particular success story of the young girl Kashmala Munawar.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Christian mourns the death of their relative who were killed in the September 22, blast at the All Saint’s Church, after the service in Peshawar. Victims of All Saints church still bears the physical scars of the September 22 bombing believed to be the deadliest ever against Muslim majority Pakistan’s small Christian community. More than 85 people were killed and around a hundred were injured when a devastating two-pronged suicide attack targeted their place of worship on September 22. 2013.  The seemingly senseless slaughter of so many innocent civilians shocked Pakistan and it is still not clear who carried out the attack.

Peshawar church blast has united the Christians of the country. Christians all over the country and world came and showed their support. Many social rights activists including me reached there to help the victims, many helped them in many ways but with the passage of time, they got busy with their routine work. There are few FB activists and politicians, who just visit and post pictures to show their activities. Certainly organizations have their different projects but at the same time there is an organization that is still working on and helping the victims.

Yes, it is none other than World Vision in Progress (WVIP). WVIP not only covers the cost for annual supplies of medicine and hospital costs but also is supporting victims for medical treatment abroad. During early February, WVIP supported Kashmala Munawar to fly to Australia for further treatment. Kashmala Munawar was one of the victims of Peshawar church blast who had multiple pellets in her legs. Doctors amputated her one leg and a rod was fixed in her second leg. But doctors were not sure about saving her second leg. WVIP requested its Australian partner Jeannette Wells and her husband Ron for her treatment in their country. The said couple requested Children First Foundation to help them in this regard. And thus she went to Australia for her further treatment.

WVIP is playing a vital role in helping Christians suffering attacks and riots in recent years. Many victims still waiting for the government promised [aid] and church administration [is also still waiting] as well for the maintenances [that the government promised]. Even when the walls are pristine again, it will take rather longer to heal the emotional scars of a traumatized congregation.

Be Blessed,

Shamim Masih

Two more Christian Girls Abducted

Pakistan- Circle D G Khan & R I Khan

Shamim Masih reports on the abduction of two Christian-Pakistani girls by Muslims.

Islamic Supremacism strikes Christian and other minority non-Muslim girls in Pakistan. Mohammed expanded Islam against non-Muslims via the pirating of wealth in raids and kidnapping girls for sex-slavery. Since these immoral and inhumane actions are enshrined in the Quran, these kinds of practices are like the veritable uncreated word of Allah. The methods may have changed a bit in the 21st century from Mohammed’s 7th century but the practice remains.

~Here is a little tongue-in-cheek human exposing Mohammed’s beginning as compared to the three years of preaching by Jesus prior to the Resurrection. **Warning, Muslims will not find this learning experience humorous**

Two more Christian Girls Abducted

By Shamim Masih

Sent: 3/19/2014 9:34 AM

ISLAMABAD:  Forced marriages and forced conversions to Islam is a common practice in Pakistan. I see, if there is not an organization like World Vision in Progress (WVIP) protecting Christian faith, the below mentioned two Christian girls might have gone under the curtain. It’s a story of two districts Rahim Yar Khan (R I Khan) and Dera Ghazi Khan (D G Khan), both districts house banned organizations like Sipha Sahabha and Jeyshe Muhammad (SA HERE).

On March 04, 2014; Komal Yousaf 15 was raped and married forcefully and was converted to Islam. Yousaf and Rubina, parents of the girl, work in a factory. Mohammad Aslam Shah, one of the co-workers, often asked them to convert to Islam but they refused saying that they are happy with Christian faith. He didn’t stop there but on February 24, he went to their house with some of his armed companions and asked them to embrace Islam or be ready to face dire consequence. On the same day, when the parents went to work, he came to their house and kidnapped the young girl Komal Yousaf. The couple [parents] went to the police station for the registration of the First Investigation Report (FIR) against the suspect Mohammad Aslam Shah but police didn’t cooperate. Instead the police claimed that the young girl had been converted to Islam and married to Mohammad Aslam. Providentially, the parents came to WVIP and requested for help in this issue. WVIP immediately went into the court and asked the accused to produce the girl in the court. The girl told the court that she has been forcefully married and was threatened to sign a marriage agreement. She also told the court that she was sexually assaulted during these days.

The same case is with the young Sobia, 19 from D G Khan. She used to work with her mother in different houses as maid. One day she went to Adil Zulifqar to work but the owner forcefully married her and shifted to Lahore. WVIP came to know [of Sobia’s situation] through a reliable source that he had sold the girl to a rich family in a different city. The [WVIP] organization is dealing with these two cases to rescue these girls. Farrukh H Saif, chief of WVIP said that Muslims in Pakistan believed that Christian girls are commodities and not human beings. It’s [this Muslim reasoning that makes it] a common practice. Around 2000 Hindus migrated to India and many Christians are seeking refuge status in different countries [due to the Muslim abduction practice].

It is observed that on-going violence against minority women has increased and minorities are seeking a safe haven. Tania, Rebecca, Palwisha, Sonia were abducted earlier and now [the Muslim abduction phenomena] has [become] Sobia and Komal’s turn.

Be Blessed,

Shamim Masih

Man of Mass – Making Difference

Farrukh H Saif

Shamim Masih writes about bold activism by Farrukh H. Saif of World Vision in Progress (WVIP). This is not to the first time Shamim has had high praise of Saif and WVIP because the organization actually does work for the Christian poor in Pakistan. Evidently many Pakistani-Christian activists limit their activism to just writing about the misery of Christians in order to receive donations from Christians outside of Pakistan in the West. Shamim asserts that Saif and WVIP do more than write, they actually try to provide the necessities needed by the poor ranging from physical needs to legal aid in Pakistan in which Sharia Law is the measurement of right and wrong in society and in the rule of law.

Man of Mass – Making Difference

By Shamim Masih

Sent: 10/31/2013 9:09 PM

ISLAMABAD: In Pakistan, on September 22, 2013, more than 125 people died and around 170 injured in a bomb attack on All Saints Church, Peshawar. Taliban, or one of their affiliate groups, had gone to St. Dominic’s Church in Bahawalpur in October 2001, shot the guard at the gate and then killed 15 people in the congregation. It was the first mass-killing of Christians in the history of Pakistan. Then, Jihadists are ever more brazen in their determination to target Christians. But still, US President and other leaders in the West – though remembering the victims and acknowledging the evil in passing, are not making any concerted effort to make this particular slaughter of innocents a foreign policy priority.

Persecution and poverty are terrible things in Pakistan and at WVIP, “meeting the needs of our people is our priority. We try to minimize the devastating effects of the homelessness and hunger by providing nutritious meals and safe environment,” said Farrukh H Saif, Executive Director World Vision in Progress.

I have been covering the minority issues; Pakistani Christians facing persecution for three decade or so. During my visits across the country, I meet many human rights activists. Many people used to tell me stories of their work for the community and the extended community as well. But I didn’t find many of them working on the grass root level. Some, so called activists are running their organizations just on internet; I find no working but photo session. Normally I don’t write for them even they ask me do so, But when I find someone working on ground, I do. And I feel, it should be acknowledged.

I heartily salute WVIP upon the working for injured in All Saints Church Peshawar attack. I have visited Peshawar church thrice and observed the people saying that WVIP is working on ground reality. You know the people said, “aik harry harry ay koi, o theek kum kar reha ay” (there is person name Harry, who is working on ground). This organization has been taking care of the injured patients, bearing the medical expenses, managing the house hold items for deserving people there. Farrukh said that since then 18 patients of the Peshawar church incident have been cured. And WVIP is taking care of the patient’s medication to his/her house hold needs.

I met Farrukh H Saif during the Rimsha case, when he came to deliver her. Unfortunately, his extended team leader, (who claim human rights champion) couldn’t manage it. So WVIP had to back out from the case and Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, jumped into the fire and become the champion. Farrukh didn’t lose heart and started helping the displaced families of the Rimsha case. I witness to it that during the case proceeding and after her release, this man had been taking care of those internally displaced people – IDPs. (Many people are not aware that with Rimsha incident more than 250 families were displaced and still suffering).

Then I saw WVIP was distributing necessary items to the people of Joseph Colony, Lahore. And now he is busy with the injured people in Peshawar incident. WVIP has been working on persecution. He told me on the phone that the above mentioned organization has worked the many blasphemy accused and have taken number of cases so far.

There are huge issues with Pakistan situation which this short article doesn’t attempt to address. However, put aside for a moment what you feel about the conflict in the region and who’s right and wrong. Christians are under threats; they are living right in the middle of an unwinnable situation. While we pray for peace in the troubled region in the world, let’s remember them as well. It really is the right thing to do.

Christian couple arrested in Gojra in blasphemy case

Shamim Masih

Sent: 7/21/2013 4:08 PM

ISLAMABAD: Sajjad Masih accused of blasphemy case reportedly sent to jail for life imprisonment, hardly a week back. Yet another blasphemy case is registered against a Christian couple in Gojra city of a Punjab province.

According to the sources, Shafaqat Masih 35, and his wife Shagufta Bibi were arrested so far under alleged of blasphemy case but the First Investigation Report (FIR) No. 407/13 is registered under 295-B, C PPC against anonymous today in Gojra City.

Gojra is religiously sensitive, having witnessed massive attacks on Christians triggered by reports of desecration of Holy Quraan. Eight family members were burnt alive and about forty houses and a Church were set ablaze by a mob in August, 2009. Now again it seems that it is under threat.

The petitioner Rana Mohammad Fiaz said that blasphemous text was sent to him from a mobile number. Police found the SIM card and arrested the couple.

Ms. Shagufta is lady worker at the local school and taking care of her two teens and her husband is crippled.

As soon as I heard the incident, I requested World Vision in Progress – WVIP to reach there at once to take care of the kids. On my humble request, WVIP management has sent its official to look into the matter.

Basharat Khokhar, activist in Rimsha case has condemned the incident and urged the administration to take the preventive measures accordingly.

The local administration has taken a sensitive issue seriously, the administrative told.

Be Blessed,

Shamim Masih

Pakistan Blasphemy Laws Persecute Christians

Martha Bibi to right

John R. Houk

© April 30, 2013

I received an email from Shamim Masih regarding the Pakistani Christian Martha Bibi. She is scheduled for a court date in Lahore, Pakistan relating to – guess what? If you follow the persecution of Christians in Pakistan the answer is easy. Martha Bibi’s crime is blaspheming against Islam. Blasphemy is a death sentence in Pakistan. Blasphemy can be anything from insulting the religion of Islam, the prophet Mohammed, against Islam’s Allah, against the Quran and so on of ridiculous accusations that lead to a capital crime in Pakistan.

I had heard the name “Bibi” in one of the rare moments of the international press noticing how Muslims persecute Christians with often trumped up charges of Blasphemy. So when I went to double check on that name “Bibi” I discovered it was a different person from the news report from Shamim. The other person is Asia Bibi who has the notoriety of being the first woman convicted for a blasphemy charge with a sentence of death by hanging. Asia has been languishing in jail since November 2010 awaiting an appeal to be heard on her death sentence. I found out that Asia Bibi may get her day around the same time frame in Lahore, Pakistan as Martha Bibi.

There are a number of blasphemy legal issues facing Christians. Here are a few links that you probably will not see from Western MSM:

o   PAKISTAN: YOUNIS MASIH AND MARTHA BIBI CASES IN COURT TODAY – February 27, 2013

o   Prayers for blasphemy victim Christian women Asia and Martha Bibi in Bar Council – March 21, 2013

o   Pakistan ‘Blasphemy’ Girl Facing Prison; Mother Death Sentence – March 23, 2013 (10:31 pm)

o   Pakistan Overturns Death Sentence Of Christian; Younis Masih Released – April 3, 2013 (11:15 am)

Apparently many of the minority rights NGOs in Pakistan take turns using available money to provide legal aid to these persecuted Christians under Islamic Blasphemy Laws. Shamim points out that her current legal council is being handled by what Shamim calls World Vision in Pakistan or WVIP. I like to see what some of these NGOs do specifically because some of them may tend to slant to exploitation than actual legitimate help. I must interject that all the NGOs Shamim has been involved with appear to be on the legitimate side of the scale. Anyway, I could not find an NGO with the name World Vision in Pakistan. However, I did find an organization called World Vision in Progress (Foundation) using the same acronym WVIP. The NGO I found is focused on Pakistan so I am going to guess this is whom Shamim Masih is alluding.

Here is the email Shamim Masih has sent regarding Martha Bibi.

WVIP to fight for the fate of Martha Bibi in Pakistani court

By Shamim Masih

Sent: 4/30/2013 10:23 AM

LAHORE (Shamim Masih): World Vision in Pakistan – WVIP has submitted the power of attorney in the court to defend Martha Bibi, accused of blasphemy case. A Pakistani court has fixed May 09, 2013 as the date of to hear the case of a Christian woman accused of blasphemy.

According to Lazar Allah Rakha, WVIP’s lawyer penal Salvance Jacob, Nadeem Hassan and Lazar Allah Rakha has filed the power of attorney to precede the case of Martha Bibi in Lahore today on 30th April 2013.

Martha Bibi, 45, married with 6 children, accused of the blasphemy case and was arrested on January 22, 2007 under a blasphemy case registered on the application of a local Muslim, since then she is facing the trail court. Earlier CLAAS and LEAD family has been taking care of her case in the court.

She was arrested in early 2007 and later released from prison on bail, but the trial was pending in the Kasur session court. Her lawyer had moved an application for transference of her case to Lahore session court to avoid any misshape and Lahore High Court has accepted it and shifted it to Lahore court, said Allah Rakha.

The Christian human rights activist and lawyer said that WVIP has been extending “moral and financial support” to Martha and her family as well.

WVIP has urged Christian around the world to pray for “protection of Martha” and for “her deliverance from the blasphemy trial.”

Be Blessed,

Shamim Masih

Intro to Shamim’s WVIP

Shamim Masih writes about a Pakistan Non-Governmental Organization called World Vision in Progress (WVIP). The about page offers this self-description:

WVIP news is a project of World Vision in Progress a ground NGO working for the rights of Christians in Pakistan. It has been observed that every year 150 Million Christians endure from Persecution around the world. Almost every day Christians were persecuted in Islamic world due their faith in Christ, and local media hardly cover the reports.

World Vision in Progress is Pakistani based NGO, working against the social and religious Discrimination of Christians in Pakistan. Blasphemy Laws, forcible conversion, rape and Abduction are the level of Persecution in Pakistan.

Christian persecution in Islamic world is a modern Holocaust and WVIP felt its obligation to share and reports to international world through the Web-media, so together we all can lift our voices for our brothers and sisters.

BE THE FIRST TO LIFT YOUR VOICE……

The focus of the WVIP then is providing civil rights, human rights and social training for Pakistan’s Christians. Shamim’s post is information acquired in an interview with Farrukh Harrison. That information is a classic description of good bad old fashioned dhimmitude in which non-Muslims are offered pseudo-protection. I call the concept of dhimmitude ‘pseudo-protection’ because it is actually a theo-political muscle racket that extorts a poll tax called jizya that offers non-Muslims safety from death as long as the tax was paid and that the non-Muslim followed Islam’s Sharia Law in respect to honor Islam above their own faith or face the removal of safety and the penalty of death.

I tried to find some profile information on Farrukh Harrison and discovered he also known as Farrukh Harrison Saif. As usual when the West ignores the plight of Christians in Muslim lands profiles of heroes like Harrison are hard to come by. I did manage to find an excerpt about Harrison dated 3/21/11 so I can’t vouch for the info being up to date:

A Christian, Farrukh Harrison, is the only one amongst his family who has decided to stay back in the country. A year ago, his family moved to Holland and sought political asylum there.

“I see no future for the religious minorities in Pakistan. My relatives moved abroad, and they keep on pressing me to leave as well. The way the extremists are taking over the country, it seems that very soon all the minorities would be forcefully converted or would be killed, he says emotionally.”

He continues, saying that a number of well-to-do Christians have left for safer abodes, and others are in process of doing the same.

Running a small non-governmental organization for Christian rights, he said that it is a viable option for those who have money in their pockets to leave the country.

“Hundreds of our community have left and seek asylum abroad. It is sad that despite being the sons of the soil, and playing a major role to progress in health and education, we are the ones who are forced to pack our bags.”

Harrison feels that the cloud of extremism which blanketed the country was formed when General Ziaul Haq took the country towards a new path of Islamisation.

While the more affluent have made arrangements to leave, for the poor, there is no choice exist to stay within their four walls, and restrict their activities. … (The silenced minorities; by Rabia Ali; Beautiful Pakistan; 3/21/11)

Apparently WVIP has another website separate than the one Shamim provides at the end of his article and that link is:

http://worldvisioninprogress.webs.com/

This website provides better detail than the on Shamim provides; the person who edited the website I have posted writes in a bit of broken English which is understandable because English is not the national language of Pakistan. I encourage you to click there to get a clear look of the plight of Christians in Pakistan. The Christian plight in Pakistan (and the entire Muslim world) is not a pretty one.

Here is some video from the link I posted that demonstrates how Sunni Muslims use Pakistan’s Blasphemy Laws to persecute, assault and deprive Christians of their basic Civil Rights. Most heinous is how the Sharia Blasphemy Law mentality of Muslims looks the other way as Christian girls are raped oft times as punishment for something like the father or husband refusing to convert to Islam.

World Vision in Progress WVIP is nonprofit organization, workings based on this commandment.

WVIP is fighting against the social injustice, constitutional and religious discrimination, and forced conversion with Christians and other religious minorities in Pakistan, said WVIP chief.

Farrukh Harrison, Executive Director, World Vision in Progress- WVIP said in a telephonic interview, on his return to the country few days back.

I remember, last month, he called me and shared his concern about the safety of an accused of the blasphemy law a young man Ryan Stanten, accused of blasphemy law 295- PPC from Karachi.

Pakistani Boy Accused of ‘Blasphemy’ Relates Ordeal

Cell phone mishap results in mob attacking home of Ryan Stanton, 16.

Special to Morning Star News

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, October 17 (Morning Star News) – When 16-year-old Ryan Stanton and his father returned to their home in the middle-class area of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Karachi, the night of Oct. 8, they were stunned to see the local mosque leader and about a dozen other furious Muslims waiting for them.

“We saw about 10-15 locals led by Khursheed Alam, the main complainant in the case, and Pesh Imam Qari Ghulam Qadir, prayer leader of the colony’s mosque, standing at our door – they were visibly angry,” said the latest Christian youth in Pakistan to be charged with blasphemy. “They told my father that some people in the residential-cum-office compound of SSGC [Sui Southern Gas Company] had received a blasphemous text message from my phone number. Their tone was very aggressive, and it seemed they were fully poised to kill me.”

Ryan said the men showed his father a text message allegedly sent from Ryan’s phone to the cell phone number of one of his neighbors.

His father, Bryan Patrus, told Morning Star News that the imam’s threats became increasingly harsh as the group built up pressure on the boy to admit to sending the text message.

“He told them that it was a big misunderstanding and someone had misused his phone, but they weren’t ready to listen,” Patrus said.

Patrus said that his son’s Muslim friends had framed him.

“On more than a dozen occasions, some of Ryan’s friends had asked him why he wouldn’t accept Islam, but Ryan used to ignore their nagging,” said Patrus, who has twice suffered strokes that have left his left side paralyzed. “On the night of Oct. 7, Ryan and his friends went to see a cricket match in our family car. The very next night, Ryan was being hounded [sought] around the city.”

At his home that night, the mob led by the imam, Qari Ghulam Qadir, was reportedly forcing their way through the door. Finding no one, they settled for looting and arson; media reported that several people were seen running away with valuables while others burned furniture on the street. (READ THE REST)

Islamabad Pakistan, Oct 14, (SHAMIM MASIH):

On Friday afternoon (October 12th), after Muslim Jumma prayer a 600 strong mob attacked and damaged a church in the old city area of Karachi.  Earlier the same pillagers set fire to the belongings of  Ryan Bryan a teenager now accused of blasphemy in the same town.  .

The BPCA sent Shamim Maish to Karachi to investigate this new incident and he reached the same evening. He was shocked to see more destruction just days after the attack on the church in Mardan.

On Saturday a large number of civil society activists and members of the Christian community held a demonstration, urging the authorities to protect them from the extremists who attacked and damaged a church and threatened to kill an innocent teenager caught up in a swarm of hatred.  Literally hundreds of Christians braved the animosity directed towards then to vent their frustrations against the injustice meted out upon them. The protesters chanted slogans and demanded security for the minority communities and their places of worship. They demanded that the attackers should be punished under the law. (READ THE REST)

Then he was not in contact and I remained busy in my routine work. A few days later, I called him but he didn’t reply yet left a massage on face-book (social media) for me that he is not in Pakistan and will contact me once he is back.

On his return to the country, he told me that his visit purpose was to secure the life of the accused of blasphemy case.

He said, sadly, violence against religious minorities remains prevalent in Pakistani society. They are treated as second class citizen status and their women are raped and abuses go unreported and society turns a largely blind eye. As a result, many victims not only suffer physically, but are also traumatized and with feelings of hopelessness, isolation and humiliation.

WVIP continues to help victims by helping them to report their abuse to the relevant authorities. WVIP also provides the victims of abuse with basic items to meet their practical needs, and provide counseling to help them move beyond their traumatic experiences. It includes legal assistance on handling the case against the perpetrator and how to cope with the physical impact of the abuse.

The legal team works with victims of religious intolerance, rape and sexual abuse, trafficking, illegal detention, torture, domestic violence and other forms of oppression, as well as people facing charges of blasphemy under Pakistan’s notorious Blasphemy law, he added.

He went on to say that WVIP has dealt with many cases and has been working on cases involving the Hadood Ordinance, a law brought into existence under former military dictator Gen Zia ul Haq that led to hundreds of women victims of rape being accused of zina (extramarital sex) and consequently imprisoned. The perpetrators, meanwhile, often go unpunished.

Sadly, destitute women and children account for a high proportion of victims of oppression. Poor people in Pakistan generally have little or no awareness of their basic legal and human rights and WVIP provides the women and children with accommodation, food, clothes, recreational facilities, medical assistance, education and counseling sessions.
